My name is Cayla Key (Cayla/they/them). I am a creative researcher and educator working at the intersection of design, technology, and ethics. Drawing on Queer and Feminist perspectives, I investigate more responsible and sustainable design frameworks for everyday technologies. I use co-speculative and first-person methods as part of a research-through-design-approach. I aim to bring ethics and care into my methodological approaches, critiquing, broadening, and humbling my own processes of knowledge production and reproduction.
I currently serve as an Interaction Design Lecturer at the University of Washington's School of Art + Art History + Design. I am a former Marie Sklodowska-Curie Research Fellow and Mozilla Research Fellow with diverse design experiences ranging from graphic to soft-goods industrial design. I am a Ph.D. candidate in Human-Computer Interaction from Northumbria University and hold a B.A in Interaction Design from the University of Washington. My work had been awarded a Best Paper Awards and 4 Best Paper Honorable Mention Awards at the ACM conferences Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI) and Designing Interactive Systems (DIS). My work has been funded by the European Commission and Mozilla.
